Hawker Construction, an Award Winning Home Builder and remodeler has been chosen for the 2019 Big50 Award. Each year the REMODELING Big50 inducts 50 remodeling companies that have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers have taken the lead in raising industry standards.

Unlike remodelers who lost their business during the recession, Ivan Hawker found his. Freshly graduated with a structural and construction management degree, Hawker was ready to start working for Disney on a lucrative new project. Then the economy crashed, Mickey Mouse changed his mind, and Hawker Construction, an Award Winning Home Builder was born. “It’s a recession-built company,” says Hawker, the firm’s president.

Fortunately, Hawker had an ace in the hole. His grandpa, who taught Hawker his trade, owned 26 rental properties that needed tending. It wasn’t long before word of mouth took over and Hawker graduated again, from real-estate fixes to full-fledged home remodels. Just last year, the company exploded from $1.2 million in sales to $3 million.

Hawker credits the systems and processes he put in place early for his ability to withstand the kind of growth that often sends other companies into a tailspin. The biggest of those is his project management system, CoConstruct. “It’s allowed us to streamline our communication trail throughout the entire project, not only with subs and team, but also with clients, designers, and all of our vendors,” he says.

That communication is crucial to building the one thing Hawker credits for his success more than anything else—relationships. “We live and die on those personal relationships,” he says. “It’s so important because you’re dealing with people’s sanctuary.”

As the company looks to its five-year goal of building a dream home from the ground up, Hawker is sharpening his tools and processes to be ready for the challenge, including updating job descriptions, the employee handbook, and standard operating procedures. At the same time, he’s looking to expand his team’s education and training to take on full-home construction. “We know the next five years are going to be exciting as we take our Orange County Home Builder company to a whole new level,” he says.
